FORT HOOD, Texas – An Army officer opened fire Thursday with two handguns at the Fort Hood military base in an attack that left 12 people dead and 31 wounded. Authorities killed the gunman and apprehended two other soldiers in what appears to be the worst mass shooting at a U.S. military base.

There was no immediate word on a motive. The shooting began around 1:30 p.m., said Lt. Gen. Bob Cone at Fort Hood. He said all the casualties took place at the base's Soldier Readiness Center, where soldiers who are about to be deployed or who are returning undergo medical screening.

"It's a terrible tragedy. It's stunning," Cone said.

A law enforcement official identified the shooting suspect as Army Maj. Malik Nadal Hasan. The official said Hasan, believed to be in his late 30s, was killed after opening fire at the base. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to discuss the case publicly.

A defense official, also speaking on condition of anonymity, said Hasan was a mental health professional — an Army psychologist or psychiatrist. Officials say it was not clear what Hasan's religion was, but investigators are trying to determine if Hasan was his birth name or if he may have changed his name and converted to Islam at some point.

A graduation ceremony for soldiers who finished college courses while deployed was going on nearby at the time of the shooting, said Sgt. Rebekah Lampam, a Fort Hood spokeswoman.

Greg Schanepp, U.S. Rep. John Carter's regional director in Texas, was representing Carter at the graduation, said John Stone, a spokesman for Carter, whose district includes the Army post.

Schanepp was at the ceremony when a soldier who had been shot in the back came running toward him and alerted him of the shooting, Stone said. The soldier told Schanepp not to go in the direction of the shooter, he said.

The base was locked down after the shootings. The wounded were dispersed among hospitals in central Texas, Cone said. Nine were taken to Scott & White Memorial Hospital in Temple. A hospital spokeswoman says all had been shot and are adults. A Fort Hood spokesman said he could not immediately confirm any identities of the injured.

Lisa Pfund of Random Lake, Wis., says her daughter, 19-year-old Amber Bahr, was shot in the stomach but was in stable condition. "We know nothing, just that she was shot in the belly," Pfund told The Associated Press. She couldn't provide more details and only spoke with emergency personnel.

"I ask that all of you keep these families and these individuals in your prayers today," Texas Gov. Rick Perry said.

The shootings on the Texas military base stirred memories of other recent mass shootings in the United States, including 13 dead at a New York immigrant center in March, 10 killed during a gunman's rampage across Alabama in March and 32 killed in the deadliest mass shooting in modern U.S. history at Virginia Tech in 2007.

Around the country, some bases stepped up security precautions, but no others were locked down.

"The bottom line for us is that we are increasing security at our gates because the threat hasn't yet been defined, and we're reminding our Marines to be vigilant in their areas of responsibility," said Capt. Rob Dolan, public affairs officer for the Marine Corps Air Station in Yuma, Ariz.

In Washington, President Barack Obama called the shooting "a horrific outburst of violence." He said it's a tragedy to lose a soldier overseas and even more horrifying when they come under fire at an Army base on American soil.

"We will make sure that we get answers to every single question about this horrible incident," the commander in chief said. "We are going to stay on this."

Covering 339 square miles, Fort Hood is the largest active duty armored post in the United States. Home to about 52,000 troops as of earlier this year, the sprawling base is located halfway between Austin and Waco.

About a mile from Fort Hood's east gate, Cynthia Thomas, director of Under the Hood Cafe, a coffee house and outreach center, was calling soldiers and friends on the post to make sure they're OK.

"It's chaotic," Thomas said, as a SWAT team just drove by. "The phones are jammed. Everybody is calling family members and friends. Soldiers are running around with M-16s."

Fort Hood officially opened on Sept. 18, 1942, and was named in honor of Gen. John Bell Hood. It has been continuously used for armored training and is charged with maintaining readiness for combat missions.

I'm waiting to see if they announce what the gunman's motivation is.

This is tragic. My thoughts go out to everyone in the military and their families - especially those at Ft. Hood.

I'll hold my peace for now, but if religion was a motive and this shrink did this because of a muslim religion that he wanted to follow, then anyone in the US who claims to be muslim or has a muslim name needs to be scrutinized and watched as a would be terrorist. I could be wrong, and this was just a shrink with a funny name who went nuts. It's a good thing that someone shot this terrorist before he killed more.

I know. It's hard not to jump to conclusions. It might be telling to see if the other two people arrested in connection with this have Muslim names too.

I'm waiting for the authorities to announce a motive.

It could be anything from someone going postal, to a planned terrorist attack.

WASHINGTON (November 5, 2009)—The suspected gunman behind the deadly shooting Thursday at Fort Hood was an Army psychiatrist who spent six years at Walter Reed Army Medical Center before he was transferred to Fort Hood in July, officials told The Associated Press.

The officials, who had access to Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan's military record, said he received a poor performance evaluation while at Walter Reed.

The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because military records are confidential.

The Virginia-born soldier was single with no children.

He was 39 years old and was a graduate of Virginia Tech University, where he was a member of the ROTC and earned a bachelor's degree in biochemistry in 1997.

He received his medical degree from the military's Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences in Bethesda, Md., in 2001.

He did his internship, residency and a fellowship at Walter Reed.

Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison, R-Texas, said Hasan was about to deploy overseas.

Hutchison said she was told about the upcoming deployment by generals based at Fort Hood, but it was unclear if he was headed to Iraq or Afghanistan and exactly when he was scheduled to leave.

Federal law enforcement officials said Hasan came to their attention at least six months ago because of Internet postings that discussed suicide bombings and other threats.

The officials say the postings appeared to have been made by Hasan, but said they are still trying to confirm that he was the author.

They said an official investigation was not opened.

The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss the case.

One of the Web postings that authorities reviewed is a blog that equates suicide bombers with a soldier throwing himself on a grenade to save the lives of his comrades.

Starting to sounds like that terrorist that infiltrated the 101 Airborne right before the Gulf War restarted. I guess this one could find a grenade to roll into the group.

If I was the DoD I'd be conducting a review of all personnel to find out if there are more spread through our Armed Forces ready to go off like time bombs. :(

Yup, make the questionable ones eat spam or something. Our troops have enough trouble with the enemy blending in with the civilian populace that they can't shoot. They must be kept safe from an enemy that is blending into our uniforms.

Shooting suspect still alive

FORT HOOD, Texas – An Army psychiatrist set to be shipped overseas opened fire at the Fort Hood Army post Thursday, authorities said, a rampage that killed 12 people and left 31 wounded in the worst mass shooting ever at a military base in the United States.

The gunman, first said to have been killed, was wounded but alive and in stable condition under military guard, said Lt. Gen. Bob Cone at Fort Hood. "I would say his death is not imminent," Cone said. Col. Ben Danner said the suspect was shot four times and was in critical condition.

The man was identified as Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan, a 39-year-old from Virginia.

President Barack Obama called the shooting at the Soldier Readiness Center, where soldiers who are about to be deployed or who are returning undergo medical screening, "a horrific outburst of violence."

"It's difficult enough when we lose these brave Americans in battles overseas," the commander in chief said. "It is horrifying that they should come under fire at an Army base on American soil."

There was no official word on motive. Hasan had transferred to Fort Hood in July from Walter Reed Medical Center, where he received a poor performance evaluation, according to an official who spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to discuss the case publicly.

Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison, R-Texas, said generals at Fort Hood told her that Hasan was about to deploy overseas. Retired Col. Terry Lee, who said he had worked with Hasan, told Fox News he was being sent to Afghanistan.

Lee said Hasan had hoped Obama would pull troops out of Afghanistan and Iraq and got into frequent arguments with others in the military who supported the wars.

Faizul Khan, a former imam at a mosque Hasan attended in Silver Spring, Md., said he spoke often with Hasan about how Hasan wanted to find a wife. Hasan was a lifelong Muslim and attended prayers regularly, often in his Army uniform, Khan said.

The shooter used two pistols, one of them semiautomatic. Neither were military-issued, Danner said.

Video from the scene showed police patrolling the area with handguns and rifles, ducking behind buildings for cover. Sirens could be heard wailing while a woman's voice on a public-address system urged people to take cover.

"I was confused and just shocked," said Spc. Jerry Richard, 27, who works at the center but was not on duty during the shooting. "Overseas you are ready for it. But here you can't even defend yourself."

Soldiers at Fort Hood don't carry weapons unless they are doing training exercises.

The Rev. Greg Schannep was about to head into a graduation ceremony when a man in uniform approached him, warning him that someone had opened fire. Schannep heard three volleys of gunfire and saw people running.

"There was a burst of shots and more bursts of shots and people running everywhere," said Schannep, who works for local Congressman John Carter.

The uniformed man who had warned him ran to the theater. Schannep said he could see the man's back was bloodied from a wound. The man survived, was treated and will be fine, Schannep said.

Cone said initially three people were held, and all have been interviewed. Authorities believe, however, that there was a single shooter.

The Soldier Readiness Center holds hundreds of people and is one of the most populated parts of the base, said Steve Moore, a spokesman for III Corps at Fort Hood. Nearby there are barracks and a food center where there are fast food chains.

The wounded were dispersed among hospitals in central Texas, Cone said. Their identities, and the identities of the dead, were not immediately released.

Amber Bahr, 19, was shot in the stomach but was in stable condition, said her mother, Lisa Pfund of Random Lake, Wis.

"We know nothing, just that she was shot in the belly," Pfund told The Associated Press. She couldn't provide more details and only spoke with emergency personnel.

Hasan, whose family said he was born in suburban Washington, is single with no children. He graduated from Virginia Tech, where he was a member of the ROTC and earned a bachelor's degree in biochemistry in 1997. He received his medical degree from the military's Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences in Bethesda, Md., in 2001 and was at Walter Reed for six years for his internship, residency and a fellowship.

"We are shocked and saddened by the terrible events at Fort Hood today," his cousin, Nadar Hasan, said in a statement issued on behalf of their family. "We send the families of the victims our most heartfelt sympathies."

The attack happened just down the road from one of the worst mass shootings in U.S. history. On Oct. 16, 1991, George Hennard smashed his pickup truck through a Luby's Cafeteria window in Killeen, Texas, and fired on the lunchtime crowd with a high-powered pistol, killing 22 people and wounding at least 20 others.

No other shooting at a military base in the U.S. has been anywhere near as deadly as Thursday's. In 1993, a gunman at Fort Knox shot five civilian co-workers, killing three, and then fatally shot himself.

Around the country, some bases stepped up security precautions, but no others were locked down.

Covering 339 square miles, Fort Hood is the largest active duty armored post in the United States. Home to about 52,000 troops as of earlier this year, it is located halfway between Austin and Waco.

It would be a military court too right - can't the seal more records from the public than a public court?

And this article says the gunman is still alive - he was being counted as one of the "twelve" so I wonder if that number should be 11.

The more I read about this the more pissed off I get. This fucker needs to be buried UNDER Leavenworth for a couple of months and then executed.

And yes, Chelle, they can seal everything in a Military Court. He's more likely to get the death penalty also.

FORT HOOD (November 5, 2009)—Ft. Hood released a statement early Friday morning raising the death toll from Thursday's shooting to 13.

The Fort Hood psychiatrist suspected of opening fire at around 1:30 p.m. Thursday at the post’s busy Soldier Readiness Center in a rampage that left those 13 dead and now 30 injured was under guard at Scott & White Hospital Thursday night while investigators tried to determine the motive for the violence.

Maj.Terrorist Malik Nadal Hasan, who officials initially thought was among the dead, was not cooperating with investigators, Fort Hood Commander Lt. Gen Bob Cone said Thursday night.

Hasan is the soldier suspected of walking into the center armed with two handguns and opening fire on fellow troops.

A civilian female whom Cone identified as a first responder was the first person to fire at Hasan, who was hit at least four times (civilian contracted law enforcement officer).

“Earlier it was reported that one victim that was killed was a female civilian officer, Cone said.

“We now know that the female officer is alive, just out of surgery and in stable condition.

“She is believed to be the first responder who shot the suspect,” Cone said.

After the shooting ended, Cone said, soldiers who were not injured immediately began to administer first aid to the wounded, ripping off their uniforms to make crude bandages.

A 1st Cavalry Division sergeant who witnessed the shooting rampage said, “It was over quick, but it still seemed like a long time.”

"When everything went off it was chaos and everyone was running everywhere,” he said.

"This really got everyone shaken."

"Most of the guys were both sad and angered,” he said.

Two other soldiers were taken into custody after the shooting, but a spokesman for Rep. John Carter, R-Round Rock, said they were later released.

Fort Hood was locked down after the shooting, but the lockdown ended Thursday evening.

The post set up a hotline for relatives of Fort Hood personnel, who may call (254) 288-7570 or (866) 836-2751 for information about loved ones.

The nine Killeen ISD schools on post were locked down until the post was secured and parents were allowed to drive to campuses to pick up their children.

All available ambulances and paramedics in the area responded to the post in response to the shooting.

Some of the wounded were taken to Darnall Army Medical Center and 10 others including Hasan were flown or taken by ambulance to Scott & White Hospital in Temple (and I know where  ).

The hospital’s Associate Chief Medical Officer Dr. Glenn Couchman said Scott & White’s Command Center was mobilized and additional operating rooms were opened.

The hospital was closed to the public Thursday night as attention was focused on the victims and families and to ensure the safety of patients and staff.

Four soldiers were taken to Seton Hospital in Williamson County and two, who were grazed by gunfire, were treated and then released.

The other two required surgery and were both in stable condition Thursday night.

The Temple VA offered assistance to Ft. Hood and will be providing pharmaceutical supplies.

The VA set aside 14 beds in case more room is needed and remain on standby for more info from Ft. Hood.

“It is truly overwhelming the offers of support that we have had at the national and local level, in dealing with this situation,” Cone said.

Friday, he said, “we will observe a day of mourning, local Schools will be open and we will move back to normalcy as soon as possible.”

The FBI and the Texas Rangers are assisting Fort Hood investigators.

Late Thursday night, Fort Hood, local and federal officers were at the two-story apartment complex where Hasan lived at 1801 N. 4th St. in Killeen.

Officers surrounded and evacuated the complex late Thursday afternoon.

About 20 residents were taken to the Killeen Community Center.

ATF agents and Fort Hood’s bomb squad were checking the building before investigators entered Hasan’s apartment to begin a search.

Hasan spent six years at Walter Reed Army Medical Center before he was transferred to Fort Hood in July, officials told The Associated Press.

He was scheduled for deployment.

The officials, who had access to Hasan's military record, said he received a poor performance evaluation while at Walter Reed.

The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because military records are confidential.

Federal law enforcement officials said Hasan came to their attention at least six months ago because of Internet postings that discussed suicide bombings and other threats.

The officials said Hasan appeared to have made the postings, but said they are still trying to determine if he was the author.

One of the Web postings that authorities reviewed is a blog that equates suicide bombers with a soldier throwing himself on a grenade to save the lives of his comrades.

President Barack Obama called a mass shooting a "horrific outburst of violence."

He said he doesn't yet know all the details but promised the government would get "answers to every single question."

The commander in chief says it's a tragedy to lose a soldier overseas and even more horrifying when they come under fire at an Army base on American soil.

Obama also said his thoughts and prayers are with the wounded and families of the fallen.

Rep. Chet Edwards, D-Waco, issued a statement in which he said, “The soldiers and families of Fort Hood have served our nation with distinction and made tremendous sacrifices for all of us so I am heart-broken to learn that this terrible tragedy has occurred.

“My family’s thoughts and prayers go out to all the victims and loved ones.”

Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison, R-Texas, said she was shocked and saddened by the violence.

“Our dedicated military personnel have sacrificed so much in service to our country, and it sickens me that the men and women of Fort Hood have been subjected to this senseless, random violence. I know all Americans share this concern for the soldiers and their families who are affected by this tragedy,” she said.

From KWTX
My Governor has ordered state flags to half mast, and he's wanting the terrorist tried in Texas courts. True, the Feds have the death penalty, but the Texans know how to use it.

Was this guy actually doing any of those things, or are you just assuming that, based on the fact that he was a muslim?

News reports are stating that he did spend internet time on extremist sites, that he gave his stuff away, said good-bye to a friend and was shouting that while he was shooting people.

By that logic, anyone who owns a gun should be seriously scrutinized because he used a gun to commit this horrible crime, and all males should be scrutinized because some males are rapists, and all parents should be scrutinized because sometimes they abuse their own children, etc. it's tempting, and it's easy to point to religion in this case, but we don't seem to paint everyone with the same broad brush when other crimes occur.

My Governor has ordered state flags to half mast, and he's wanting the terrorist tried in Texas courts. True, the Feds have the death penalty, but the Texans know how to use it.

yeah, unlike here where people sit comfortably on Death Row for over 20 years.

in fairness, major John Smith could be a muslim extremist too. This fella could have been John Smith at one time, the articles say he was born in Virginia. White people are converted too, it's just that most extremist only consider Arabs true muslims, from what I understand. I doubt these "extremist sites" were breeding grounds for the real deal, since I"m guessing they tend to operate more on the downlow than that.

This fella may have converted as an adult, then spent a lot of time on these sites and went off. He may be a messed up fella looking for fufillment, converted and that didn't do it, so went this route. Doubt this is gonna help him feel fufilled either.

Hasan was a lifelong Muslim and attended prayers regularly, often in his Army uniform, Khan said.

from the article Ulrick posted. He was a lifelong muslim, and he objected to the wars in AFghanistan and Iraq.

Hasan, the sole suspect in the massacre of 13 fellow US soldiers in Texas, attended the controversial Dar al-Hijrah mosque in Great Falls, Virginia, in 2001 at the same time as two of the September 11 terrorists, The Sunday Telegraph has learnt. His mother's funeral was held there in May that year.

The preacher at the time was Anwar al-Awlaki, an American-born Yemeni scholar who was banned from addressing a meeting in London by video link in August because he is accused of supporting attacks on British troops and backing terrorist organisations.

and then there's this from cnn protest outside NY mosque at 2:25 they condone the fort hood attack.
in all fairness Muslim organizations were condemning this attack BEFORE and AFTER it was known that he was Muslim. I cant find the links right now so Ill post them later.

Then why the heck would he have joined the military? I thought background checks, etc. were done on applicants. :headscratch:
